The Heart of Nonviolent Communication
25 Key Distinctions – From Separation to Connection
Stephanie Bachmann Mattei, Kristin K. Collier
What are key distinctions? In Nonviolent Communication (NVC), they help to highlight and clarify essential differences between behaviours and attitudes that are connected to life and those that are disconnected from life. Due to our upbringing and socialisation, we are often more familiar with approaches that are disconnected from life. However, when we know both sides and can distinguish between them, choices suddenly open up for us. We realise that we have a choice at all. The authors explain 25 key distinctions, such as requests vs. demands, love as a feeling vs. love as a need, or empathic understanding vs. intellectual speculation. The presentation of each key distinction is rounded off with an example and an exercise and reflection section. ‘I can imagine how happy Marshall [Rosenberg] would be to read this book. He would know that his gift to us is being developed and deepened by a new generation.’ – Lucy Leu Stephanie Bachmann Mattei is a certified NVC trainer, assessor at the Centre for Nonviolent Communication and MBSR trainer. She studied philosophy in Florence, wrote her dissertation on Indian philosophy and lives with her family in Florida. Kristin K. Collier is an author who deals with educational issues within the framework of NVC, particularly neurodiversity. She teaches and leads groups for children and young people, including those on the autism spectrum.
